The Silicon Dreams

In this episode of The Silicon Dreams by Orbis86, Sharlaine Menezes interviews Kuntal Ganguly, Partner at Momentum Capital. Kuntal is a multifaceted entrepreneur, also leading CoinQue Consulting, AcknoLedger, advising Web 3.0 & blockchain firms, and investing in startups.

Sharlaine: Kuntal, could you walk us through your journey from being a solution architect to deeply immersing yourself in the blockchain space?

Kuntal: Certainly. My journey began in the realm of software development and technology, where I primarily focused on designing enterprise applications and managing data center technologies as a solution architect. It was during one serendipitous encounter at my gym when a tech engineer from IBM introduced me to the concept of bitcoin and blockchain technology. This sparked my curiosity, prompting me to delve deeper into understanding the underlying technology behind bitcoin. From there, my exploration into distributed ledger technology (DLT) began, with its decentralized nature captivating my interest. As I delved further into the ecosystem, particularly around 2016, my focus expanded to researching the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and its implications.

Kuntal: After delving into the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and its coding language, Solidity, I was fascinated by the emergence of blockchain beyond Bitcoin. This led me to explore distributed applications and smart contracts, realizing their pivotal role in reshaping the technological landscape. Moreover, beyond the technical realm, I recognized substantial investment opportunities within the blockchain space. While traditional markets primarily revolved around equity, the advent of token-based investments in tech startups caught my attention. Witnessing the potential liquidity derived from such investments, I embarked on my investment journey in 2016, which has spanned over eight years.

Currently, I actively engage in both the technology startup ecosystem and investment activities. My involvement extends to various intriguing startups, encompassing decentralized media, Oracle solutions, digital discovery platforms, and the development of impactful decentralized applications (dapps). Witnessing the transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 is particularly compelling at this juncture. Thus, my journey in the blockchain industry encompasses a blend of technological exploration, investment endeavors, and active participation in groundbreaking projects shaping the future of decentralized systems.

Sharlaine: Could you elaborate on your role in the blockchain ecosystem, particularly regarding your involvement with founders and ecosystem players?

Kuntal: Certainly. My role revolves around fostering connections and facilitating collaborations within the blockchain ecosystem. I work closely with founders, acting as a bridge between them and various ecosystem players, including funding giants, venture capital funds, and early-stage investors. My efforts encompass guiding founders in product development, leveraging the resources and networks available within the ecosystem. Additionally, I assist in strategizing post-listing activities, such as liquidity management and market-making for tokens. In essence, my role entails nurturing partnerships, supporting growth, and providing strategic guidance to stakeholders within the blockchain space.

Sharlaine: Could you shed some light on the sectors within the blockchain ecosystem that you find particularly promising and the specific projects you're involved with?

Kuntal: Absolutely. One sector that's evolving significantly is web3 gaming, where rewards play a pivotal role in user engagement. Additionally, decentralized media has garnered considerable attention. As a partner advisor to Voice of Crypto, a decentralized media platform, I've witnessed the emphasis on authenticity and validation through blockchain technology, with users being rewarded in tokens for their contributions.

Another noteworthy sector is supply chain management, with companies like IBM pioneering innovative strategies. Blockchain's role here is crucial in ensuring transparency and authenticity throughout the supply chain, addressing concerns such as food authenticity in the organic food industry.

Overall, blockchain is poised to address major industry challenges, particularly in enhancing transparency, security, and scalability. Many companies in the web2 space are leveraging blockchain's strengths to optimize their operations and technical deployments, making significant strides in various sectors.

Sharlaine: What areas of interest are currently captivating your attention within the blockchain ecosystem, and how do you perceive the shift from web2 to web3 methodologies?

Kuntal: My focus isn't confined to a single area within the blockchain ecosystem; rather, it's the overarching shift from web2 to web3 methodologies that intrigues me. This transition encompasses various sectors, including finance, gaming, and computing. Specifically, decentralized computing has emerged as a compelling domain. While cloud computing initially generated excitement, the concept of decentralized cloud computing has revolutionized how we store and process data, emphasizing decentralization in the development process.

In the gaming sector, we're witnessing remarkable advancements in the web3 era, demonstrating the potential for decentralized systems to reshape traditional industries. Moreover, any domain where transparency and security are paramount concerns is drawing my attention, as web3 technologies offer solutions to these challenges. Overall, my interest lies in exploring how decentralized principles can enhance various sectors, paving the way for a more transparent, secure, and innovative future.

Sharlaine: What advice would you offer to new builders entering the blockchain space, particularly regarding tokenomics and fostering adoption?

Kuntal: I would emphasize three crucial points for new builders venturing into the blockchain space. Firstly, it's essential to establish a robust tokenomics structure that incentivizes participation and rewards various stakeholders, such as miners and DApp developers, for their contributions to the ecosystem. Secondly, fostering adoption requires implementing effective ecosystem reward practices, encouraging early supporters and users to engage with the platform or infrastructure. Lastly, designing token utilities that align with the platform's objectives and provide tangible benefits to users can significantly influence adoption rates. While these points are pivotal, there are numerous other considerations for builders to explore and implement as they navigate the dynamic landscape of blockchain technology.
